The sister islands of Madeira and Porto Santo are each beautiful in their own way and have much to offer nature lovers: fantastically dense laurel forests, countless hiking trails of all difficulty levels and lush flora.
In Bergün, the train is an integral part of the vacation experience. The famous UNESCO Albula-Bernina line of the fiery red Rhaetian Railway runs right through the picturesque Engadine-style village. And with the free rail pass from the Reka vacation village, you can ‘experience’ the whole canton.
My personal favourite photos from over 93,000 travel images in my database. The 28 colour and two black-and-white photos were taken over eleven years, eleven countries with ten lenses on seven cameras.
Shortly before the 2nd lockdown, I take the opportunity for a short escape to Costa Rica. In almost deserted national parks, an exuberant plant and animal world awaits me. A detailed article on my trip will appear in Terra magazine in April 2021.
The Reka vacation village is located right next to the Swiss Holiday Park, the largest leisure and vacation resort in the country. Morschach lies above Lake Lucerne and is surrounded by an impressive mountain panorama.
Grasshoppers, ants, cicadas, black flies, phasmids. Then 197 species of butterflies and even a leafcutter bee. The island is also home to endemic snakes, skinks, geckos, bats, 21 species of birds, including an entire family of bird species, the kagus.
Sri Lanka: a small, extremely diverse country with the size of Bavaria. The tropical island delights with paradisiacal beaches, mountains up to 2,500 metres high, historical sanctuaries and an exuberant flora and fauna. I spent 5 months there with my family.
Exploring the wilderness on foot in the midst of lions, elephants and buffalo? You can learn to do that. In summer 2019, I will join a field guide course in South Africa.
The tour starts in Luleå in the north of Sweden. During the tour we hike in the Muddus National Park, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Laponia. Three nights in huts or tents, no WiFi, no electricity, no running water. Instead, pure nature and outhouse toilets. Re-poaching – just the way I like it.
On board the ‘Resolute’, a comfortably equipped ship under the flag of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society, zoologists, ornithologists, oceanographers and glaciologists will conduct scientific surveys and counts over the next 10 days. And in the middle of it all, me, as a ‘temporary researcher’.
Who would have thought that my beard, of all things, would get me in front of the camera? I am invited to the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic to shoot an public relations film for an eco-energy provider. On board, of course, my camera.
The first day’s leg is already a tough one: we traipse through the sand for six hours. Our caravan is moving along the historic trade route that connected Jerusalem to Mecca for over a thousand years.
